Grant Overview
Defining Social Justice in the Context of Grant Funding for Creative Projects by African, Latine, Asian, Arab, and Native American Artists: Scope and Boundaries of Funding for Social Justice Initiatives through Creative Works by Historically Excluded Artists under the Grants to Individual African, Latine, Asian, Arab, Native American Artists Program by a Banking Institution (Max $5,000 per grantee). Eligibility and Exclusion Criteria for Social Justice Grant Applicants; Social Justice Projects and Initiatives eligible under this Grant, as well as those not eligible for the same. Social Justice Initiatives supporting Arts and Culture, and/or Quality of Life and their eligibility for this Grant. Funding available for Social Justice Initiatives in New Jersey targeting marginalized and excluded communities, with consideration for those with social equity grants, NFL inspire change grants, and other social action funding opportunities, as available from various funders including foundations that offer social justice foundation grants. Also covered are: social justice funds; social justice grants for nonprofits; and grants for social justice projects and nonprofits; with some NFL social justice grants and other social action funding, including those by non-profit support services, and community development and services organizations operating in the social justice space. The Initiative is pleased to expand the inclusivity of its grant-making by funding new works or works in process in any artistic medium by artists who identify as African, Latine, Asian, Arab, Native American. The grants will support the development of creative works or works in process, recognizing their historic and systemic exclusion from the same, and in recognition of the fact that arts and culture play a significant role in advancing social justice causes by providing a voice, a stage and representation for marginalized and under-represented sections of the community, while also advancing quality of life for these groups, and individuals. For the purposes of this grant, social justice refers to the fair and just relation between the individual and society, assessed by how wealth, opportunities, and privileges are distributed. It encompasses a wide range of issues including, but not limited to, racial justice, economic justice, gender justice, and environmental justice, all of which can be explored through various forms of art and creative expression, making them eligible for funding. This funding is open to artists working on projects that address these issues, aiming to bring about positive change through their work. Projects that directly or indirectly address systemic inequalities, challenge dominant narratives, or provide platforms for underrepresented voices are considered within the scope of this grant, subject to certain constraints. For instance, projects must comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including those related to non-discrimination and equal opportunity. One concrete regulation that applies is the requirement to comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ensuring that projects do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or religion. The funding is targeted towards artists from specific backgrounds who have been historically excluded from such opportunities, with a particular focus on New Jersey, although location is not a strict criterion. However, projects that are centered in New Jersey or address issues pertinent to the state's diverse communities may be given special consideration. When evaluating applications, the funder looks for projects that not only showcase artistic merit but also demonstrate a clear connection to social justice themes. This could involve exploring the artist's personal experiences with injustice, depicting historical or contemporary social justice issues, or envisioning alternative, more equitable futures. It is crucial for applicants to articulate how their work contributes to the broader discourse on social justice and how it might inspire change or raise awareness about specific issues. The grant is not limited to specific artistic mediums; it is open to visual arts, performance arts, literature, and any other form of creative expression that can effectively convey social justice themes. Applicants should be aware that the grant is designed to support works that are either new or in progress, meaning that completed projects or those that have been extensively developed prior to the grant period are not eligible. One verifiable delivery challenge unique to this sector is the balancing act between artistic integrity and the need to convey a specific social justice message that resonates with the grant's objectives. Artists must navigate this challenge while also meeting the funder's expectations for impact and relevance. The workflow for applicants involves submitting a detailed proposal that includes a description of the project, its relevance to social justice, a timeline for completion, and a budget. Staffing requirements are minimal since this is a grant to individual artists, but applicants must demonstrate their capability to complete the project within the proposed timeframe and budget. Resource requirements include access to necessary materials, equipment, or venues relevant to the project's medium and scope. A significant risk for applicants is ensuring compliance with the grant's eligibility criteria and reporting requirements. Failure to meet these could result in the grant being revoked. Eligibility barriers include the requirement for applicants to identify with one of the specified ethnic or racial backgrounds and to be working on a project that aligns with the funder's social justice priorities. Compliance traps include adhering to the funder's guidelines on project reporting and financial management. Projects that are not funded include those that do not demonstrate a clear link to social justice themes or those that have already been completed. Required outcomes for grantees include the completion of the proposed project and the submission of regular progress reports. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) might include the number of projects completed, the reach of the projects (e.g., audience size for performances or exhibitions), and the impact of the projects as assessed through feedback or evaluation studies. Reporting requirements will be detailed in the grant agreement but are likely to include both financial reports and narrative reports on project progress and outcomes. In terms of trends, there is a noticeable shift towards funding projects that not only highlight social injustices but also propose solutions or alternatives. The market is prioritizing projects that are innovative, impactful, and capable of reaching diverse audiences. Capacity requirements for grantees include the ability to manage the grant funds effectively and to deliver the project as proposed. Q: How do I demonstrate that my project addresses social justice themes when it's primarily focused on arts and culture? A: You can demonstrate this by explaining how your artistic work challenges dominant narratives, provides a platform for underrepresented voices, or explores themes of systemic inequality and justice, thereby contributing to the broader social justice discourse and enhancing quality of life. Q: Can I use the grant to cover costs associated with a project that has already begun, or are there specific requirements for how the funds can be used? A: The grant is intended to support new works or works in process. While you can use the grant to cover costs associated with a project that has started, provided it is not substantially completed, you must clearly justify in your application how the grant funds will be used to further develop the project. Costs that are directly related to the project's development, such as materials, equipment, or venue rental, are typically eligible. Q: Are there any specific reporting requirements or milestones that I need to adhere to if I receive the grant, and what are the potential consequences of not meeting these? A: Yes, as a grantee, you will be required to submit regular progress reports and a final report upon completion of the project. These reports should detail the project's progress, any challenges faced, and how the grant funds were used. Failure to meet these reporting requirements could result in the grant being revoked, so it's essential to understand and comply with these obligations.
